5 Days Jungle Hiking, Camping and Bow/Arrow/Spear Fishing Adventure

This hiking, camping and bow/arrow fishing adventure trip takes you deep into Suriname’s Amazon jungle several hours away from the nearest city. Our starting point is Albina, from where we head up the Marowijne river, in motorized dugout river canoes deep into the jungle. We will be crossing awesomely fierce rapids and splendid waterfalls.  After 6 hours of cruising we will reach our base camp on the left bank of the Marowijne river, at Gakaba, where we will stay for the night. Starting from there the group will hike deeper into the jungle where you will create your own camp, which will be home for a night. You will be sleeping in a jungle shed in hammocks, lit up by beautiful campfires!

You will do the following fun activities:

  • Learn to fish with spears and bow & arrow
  • Learn how to trap fish in a primitive but effective fashion
  • Spend a day practicing your skill by fishing for piranhas, anjoemaras and other types of fish
  • Sleep overnight in hammocks in jungle camps
  • Wake up to the sounds of hundreds of birds and other animals!

Accommodation Type: You will spend the first and last 2 nights of this adventure at a riverside lodge and 1 night in the actual jungle, sleeping in your own makeshift jungle shed and in a hammock.

Day 1: Trip Paramaribo, Albina, Gakaba

At 8 AM we board the bus in Paramaribo to travel to Albina. A boat will be waiting to take us to base camp at Gakaba. We will make several sightseeing stops along the way including:

  • Apatou, a French village on the right banks of the Marowijne river
  • Langa Tabiki, a large island in the middle of the Marowijne river
  • Gostoe, an island in the middle of the Marowijne river

At our Gakaba base camp (where we will sleep that night), we will have a delicious dinner, drink ice cold beers and party till late with the locals to celebrate your arrival.

Tonight you can choose to sleep in hammocks or bunk beds.

Day 2: Bow & Arrow Training, Jungle Hike

In the morning, after a delicious breakfast, we will go through all the main skills of handling bow and arrows. In the afternoon we leave the base camp and head into the Ndjuka creek by boat to a more remote spot in the jungle, where we will set up camp for the night. In the early evening, we will have a BBQ dinner and we’ll party till late at night around a campfire.

Tonight you will sleep in hammocks, deep inside the virgin Amazon jungle.

Day 3: Jungle Hike, Fishing, Partying

After an exciting in-jungle breakfast, we start the day by rehearsing all the main skills of handling bow and arrows. In the mid- morning we’ll hike to the side creeks to start hunting for fish. Around 6 PM we return with the catch to the base camp where it will be cleaned and cooked. We party at night to celebrate your newly acquired cavemen skills.

Tonight you can choose to sleep in hammocks or bunk beds.

Day 4: Sightseeing Trip

After breakfast, we take you on a sightseeing tour to various villages along the river such a Stoelmanseiland, and Grand Santi. By late-afternoon we will travel back downstream to our river lodge at Gakaba. Along the way we will visit mighty waterfalls to enjoy a swim and massage by the falling water, as well as enjoying a BBQ lunch. Around 6 PM we should be back at Gakaba where we will have a delicious dinner, drink ice cold beers and party throughout the night with locals to celebrate your visit.

Day 5: Return Trip

Today (you are probably a little bit hung over), we travel back to Albina, after enjoying a last breakfast with the base camp team.  Along the way we will stop at several beautiful uninhabited islands to have a BBQ lunch. By 5 PM we should be back in Albina, where we will board the waiting bus to Paramaribo. Around 8 PM we will be back in Paramaribo.
